Deconstruction of Zinc - Carbon batteries. For DIY projects, salvaging FREE materials or just to see what's inside it's always fun to take things apart. In this video I destroy some D-cell, C-cell & 9 volt batteries to show you what they are made of. CAUTION: before you rupture, breach or destroy any battery make sure you know what it is made with and what will happen (and then take the necessary precautions). I will quite literally be tearing these open to show you the guts of the batteries. Most Zinc - Carbon batteries are labeled Heavy Duty, Super Duty or some variation of these. The core is a cathode which is a solid carbon rod (I use these for electronic projects like making arc lights). I also repurpose the terminals for making power contacts as well as battery holders.
Once I have the 1st battery completely destroyed I will step back and show you an animation of the typical parts of a Zinc - Carbon battery. These also contain chemicals such as manganese dioxide, powdered carbon, ammonium chloride, zinc chloride and potentially more. In the future I will be taking apart some different battery types like lithium and lithium-ion batteries (these carry a whole new level of risk).
Taking things apart (or deconstructing items) not only gets you great free materials for projects but also helps you learn about how things work. In my series of "What's Inside" videos I typically show how I take things apart, how some of the parts work, options for fixing some items and sometimes I just tear things down to get to the good parts so I can upcycle or repurpose the original item. It's allot of fun!
