If it can be painted then you can make it glow in the dark! Check out this simple to make super glow paint tutorial as well as the included walk through on making glow in the dark glasses. This is awesome!
This is a perfect project for Halloween, rave parties, black light parties and so much more. Charge with any direct light source and they will glow for hours! Make a bunch of these for use at a party, concert, or costume props (cool add on prop for many different costumes and characters). Kids of all ages love glow in the dark things so this can even be used to make great kids room decorations (while the materials have been represented as safe by the manufacturer I do suggest you be cautious in your use around really young children... they like to put stuff in their mouths).
Materials used in this video:
- Bottle of clear nail polish or clear coat, top coat.
- 1/2 tsp. Strontium Aluminate* (aka Super Glow Powder). I used the color aqua (blue).
- 2 or 3 ball bearings; 5/32" (bought at a hardware store)
- White primer spray paint
- Paper & tape to make a fill funnel
- Pair of old sunglasses (used to make the glowing glasses)
*[This is a phosphor glow which works by absorbing light and then slowly releasing it. The key glow agent is called strontium aluminate and you can buy it on-line under multiple names; most types include reference to "super glow powder" or some other "super glow" type of name (I bought mine from Amazon).]
CHARGING GLOW STICKS:
1. Best light sources: direct sun light, black light tubes, UV LEDs
2. Good light sources: Fluorescent bulbs (long tubes), CFLs
3. Weak light sources: regular bulbs and regular LEDs
NOTE: the better the source = quicker charge and the brighter glow!
