Make an amazing, DIY alcohol burner that has many uses. Emergency light or emergency stove when power is not available, pseudo Bunsen burner for science projects, powerful burner for syphon coffee makers and so much more. All of the materials are pretty easy to find and the construction can be done in and hour or less.
In this video we will not only see the steps for making this DIY alcohol burner but also how to make 3 add on features for improving (AKA "Dialing In") your new burner. These include a top mounted wind screen, a table top wind screen and a snuffer / cover which helps to reduce alcohol evaporation between uses.
My original motivation for this build was to create a better burner for my Hario Syphon coffee maker (same as the Yama Syphon coffee maker). These are vacuum coffee makers that resemble a science project and make an amazing cup of coffee. This new burner gets the water to boil so much faster than the original burner that came with the syphon and produces much less soot in the process. I have been safely using this burner for over a year and it has held up amazingly well.
KEY MATERIALS:
- Compression adapters X3 (I used item #LFA-154 made by WATTS; 1/4" outside diameter X 3/8" inside diameter)
- Flame protector - heat shield; used as wick material (I got a 9" X 12" piece made by Oatey for welding. It is made of flame-resistant, carbon based woven material which keeps it from burning and because of this it is great for wick material).
- 1/4 pint canning jar (I got mine at the hardware store)
- Rubbing alcohol for fuel (isopropyl, 91% purchased at the pharmacy)
- 2 Soup cans for optional features (2 of the add on items)
- 1 small, aluminum drink can for optional feature #3 (cans with roughly 3" or 7.5 cm diameter)
Always remember to use caution when making anything that involves fire and ensure that you have taken the necessary precautions to avoid problems (including having a fire extinguisher handy).
