How to pass the IELTS Speaking Test | Part 3

Top tips on how to respond to Part 3 questions in the IELTS speaking test

In section 3 of the IELTS speaking test, the IELTS examiner asks you some additional questions (follow up questions) related to the topic you speak about in Part 2 of the test (the Cue Card Topic). The time allowance for Part 3 in the IELTS test is 4 to 5 minutes.

How many questions you are asked will depend on the length of the answers you give to each question – around 40 seconds per question is a good guide.

The format of the questions in part 3 is as follows:
Part 3 consists of two main questions (Q1 and Q2), and each main question has three sub questions. Time management is important in this section of the test because if you spend 4 minutes answering the first question and the three sub questions – you will not be asked the second main question (Q2) and sub questions. Why is this important? Because instead of responding to six questions in total – you will respond to only three.

The IELTS examiner only allows for four minutes in total. Therefore, if you speak for four minutes in response to Q1 – you will have no more time available to try and answer any other questions. It’s possible that some of the other questions provide a better opportunity for you to talk.

For some test takers, it might be easier to give shorter answers (40 seconds) and attempt to answer all six questions.
Important: Part 3 questions are related to the topic you talk about in Part 2 of the IELTS speaking test. This means that if you receive a Part 2 Cue Card Topic about food, for example, then the Part3 questions will also be related to food, in general.

Part 3 Question Examples:
We have been discussing a popular type of food in your country, and now I’d like to ask some more questions about this subject in general.

Question 1
Firstly, I would like to discuss what things make a specific kind or style of food become popular in a country. Can you suggest some things which make a certain type of food popular?
• Which types of food are the most popular in your country?
• Why do you think these particular types of food are the most popular?
• Do you think that other types of food might be popular in the future?

Question 2
Now, let’s continue and talk about national variations in styles of food. Why do you think different types of food become popular in different countries?
• Do you think it is important to be able to correctly cook the national food of the country you are born in?
• What are some of the ways in which people can learn about and learn to appreciate food from different countries?
• Do you think it’s possible that there might only be one kind of global food sometime in the future?

Good luck in your IELTS Speaking Test!
