This is a talk about Starbucks and a look at how it became what it is today.
You can download the audio Mp3, the script, listening questions and answers (all as docx) at
http://stevenaskew.com/index.php/2017/12/03/starbucks/

I started off talking about Starbucks but ended up talking for five minutes about globalization. Many people see Starbucks as the face of globalization. I suppose it was back in 2002ish, when it was at its exponential rate of expansion. Recently though, I think you would be hard pressed to look past Amazon and still talk about Starbucks.

I covered the beginnings of Starbucks, the three friends that created it, and its journey to the behemoth it is today. I also cover some of the reasons why Starbucks isn't necessarily a monster. I had a lot of fun doing this one.

I hope you enjoy this talk as much as I enjoyed making it. As always, you can find the MP3, script, listening questions and answers here for online viewing or for download. Improve your English.

English, like any language, is a four skills language; reading, writing, listening and speaking. My students often ask me, "how can I improve my English?" Well, you have to use it. How can you become a better juggler? By juggling a lot. How can you become a better tennis player? By playing a lot. How can you become a better speaker of English? By reading, writing, listening and speaking a lot.

I want to help you. These talks can be a start for you. Each talk has a script, a fill in the blanks listening exercise, multiple choice questions, longer essay type questions and sample answers. You can also download an mp3 of the talk. You can find them all on my homepage (stevenaskew.com).
So, how will that help you? Well, you need to improve all of your skills. You can do that by listening to the talk and trying all of the listening exercises. Read the script. Read the sample answers. Write the longer essay style questions. Speak ... now this is a little harder because there is no one there to listen to you ... speak the essay style questions. Before you write, listen to the talk and try to answer the questions verbally. If you have an iPhone, record yourself and then listen to it afterwards.
My students say that studying English isn't fun. I tell them that they are thinking the wrong way. English is not something to be "studied". English is a tool. You don't study a shovel before you dig a hole, you pick it up and dig. That is the same with English. The kind people at Google have given you YouTube. A massive collection of videos, the majority of which are in English. Find a topic you are interested in and listen. Then speak. Tell your empty room what you thought about it. Tell you dog your opinions. Tell your baby what it taught you. If you keep doing it, you will get better.
I hope I can help you to improve your English.
